What is Japan’s favorite Korean Drama? That would be “Winter Sonata.”

And who is Japan’s favorite Korean artists? The answer would be Kara.

Younghoon David Kim, the chairman of the Korean Cultural Industry Exchange Foundation, has been researching the effects of the Hallyu Wave in Japan. His latest analysis of the Hallyu Wave in Japan has been made public through the fourth series entitled, “Forever Wave: An Original."

According to the book, 2,000 men and women aged fifteen and older, living in Tokyo and Osaka, were targeted for a Hallyu craze survey. “Winter Sonata” is still the number one favorite show with the Japanese, according to those who participated in the poll. They were also asked “Who is the most talented Korean actor?” Coming in first place was Bae Yong Joon, followed by Choi Ji Woo in second place, two of the main leads for "Winter Sonata."

As for favorite artists, Kara proved to be the most admired performers in Japan. The ladies came in first 34.8% of the votes. They held on to a lead of 17.8% over their next competitor.
The book also looked at the rate of import and export status in Japan, while focusing on the Korean Wave’s effects on international trade with Japan. It is clear that it has had an effect as the numbers have gone up there as well.

Korea's "Nation's Little Sister", popular singer IU, held a premium live showcase in Tokyo on February 24. Her debut single, 'Good Day', is scheduled to be released in Japan on March 21st.

During an interview after the showcase, IU displayed confidence as she expressed, "I am happy to meet all my fans and I'm feeling optimistic." Last year, girl groups such as Kara and SNSD stood out in the Japanese market, but currently IU is taking on the challenge as a solo singer.

When asked "Don't you feel pressured?", IU answered, "I think it's fine to enjoy myself and not aspire too much." KARA's Nicole also gave her some advice. She said, "Nicole-unni advised me to improve my Japanese and be cute, so I told her I would work even hard on my Japanese." Also, in response to the question about which Japanese idol she looks up to, she said, "I would like to meet Utada Hikaru. Yui Arakagi is pretty too and I really admire her."

Recently, a Japanese online poll surveyed netizens on which song they would like to play for their romantic partner. Standing tall amidst a strong pool of J-Pop artists was girl group KARA, whose pop number “Winter Magic” grabbed the #1 spot.

“Winter Magic” was released back in October as their 5th Japanese single. It’s described as a mid-tempo pop song with lyrics about sending your deepest feelings to your most loved ones.

According to Recochoku, the site that hosted the online survey, “Winter Love” managed to capture listeners’ hearts as it “describes the feelings of being in love perfectly”. It also contains “cute but meaningful lyrics that everyone who’s been in love could understand“.

Meanwhile, KARA is planning to hold their first ever Japanese tour called “KARASIA” in April.

Popular girl group Kara will be releasing their first photo book ‘Je t’aime, KARA’ on Valentine’s day, February 14th, according to Daily Sports.

This will be the first photo book for the beautiful group Kara and the pictures captured the charm of each of the 5 members with the Eiffel Tower, the Seine, and other beautiful places in Paris as the backdrop.

The photo book of Kara has 280 pages of beautiful shots in comparison to the usual 100 pages.
Kara will hold the first dedicated concert, “KARASIA” on February 18th and 19th at the Olympic Gymnasium Stadium in Seoul then will tour around 6~7 countries including 5 cities in Japan, then, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Kara is decided to be award Asia Star Prize at the 7th Asia Model Awards to hold at the Seoul Olympic Hall on January 18.

The prize is a special honor only given to entertainers who played a pivotal role in spreading Asian culture throughout the world for a given year. This year Kara was selected as the winner of the prize for the considerable achievement they’ve earned during the last year of 2011 as one of the most favored “Korean Wave” stars.

The Asia Model Award, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture Sports and Culture and the Korea Tourism Organization, features 14 countries such as China, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore, providing a place for the introduction of Asian culture, especially outstanding Korean cultural contents.

A number of top stars and models from Asian countries were invited to this year’s event including Kara and Rainbow, decided to win New Star Prize.

Kara will set on an Asia concert tour in six to seven Asian cities starting from its first independent concert in February.

On January 16th, DSP Media revealed, "We are currently making up plans for each members to release their solo songs. The songs will be released before their next full album which will be released in the latter half of the year."

Last September 2011, KARA received much love for their third album, “Step”. This time, the girls are expected to bring a new image from solo songs that are to be released by each member.

Meanwhile, Nicole, who is mainly a rapper, is expected to do a collaboration with a famous male singer in her song. "As of now, we have not yet decided who the singer will be", a representative explained.

KARA is now busy preparing for their first solo concert, "KARASIA" which will be held on February 18th and 19th at the Seoul Olympic Park Stadium. The group will then extend the tour around Asia and plan to hold concerts in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Thailand starting in April.

Korean girl groups’ monetary profits earned in Japan during the past year have been revealed.

According to the results posted by Oricon that reported gross sales album numbers for 2011 (Dec 27th 2010 through December 19th 2011), girl group KARA earned over $63 million, while Girls’ Generation raked in earnings of over $52 million. Of all the artists to promote in Japan overall, KARA came in 4th overall in revenue, while Girls’ Generation came in at fifth place.

Famous J-pop group AKB48 who triumphed the K-pop girl groups earned a whopping $211 million, while boy group Arashi came in at #2 earning $199 million, followed by EXILE who earned $72 million.

A year before, KARA & Girls’ Generation came in at #1 & #2 who earned the most in Japan as rookies with $16 million and $11 million respectively. In just a single year, both groups’ profits have grown by 500%. The numbers reported by the Oricon exclude the profits made from miscellaneous promotions such as performances, CFs, royalties, and more.

KARA’s Nicole recently made a surprise visit to a preview for the movie My Way in Japan.

On January 10, Nicole attended the movie preview, which was held in Japan. The movie will be released on January 14 in Japan.

Nicole played the role of a usherette at a press conference in the movie. As her role in the movie, she gave the viewers pamphlets in a black jumper while wearing glasses.

She also said hello to the viewers with director Kang Jae Kyu on the stage before the movie began. Her surprise visit made over 2,200 people wild with excitement.

Nicole said, “Thanks to Kang, I could appear on the movie for the first time. I wanted to help him in some way so I dressed up like one of the staff member and distributed pamphlets. I think is was a great success. I also appeared on the movie for a minute as a usherette who gives people pamphlets so don’t miss me.”
She added, “The movie includes harsh history and messages for the future. I hope young people who haven’t experienced war, watch the movie.”

Kang jokingly said, “If I knew that Nicole is so popular in Japan I would have made her appear on the movie longer. I want to give Nicole, who came here to support the movie, Jang Dong Gun and Odagiri Joe’s serial number tag.”
