[News] 12.01.09. KARA & Girls’ Generation race to be the first to sell a million copies in Japan

Girl groups KARA and Girls’ Generation continue to sell an impressive number of albums in Japan into the new year, and the race to see who sells a million copies first has already begun.

According to the Oricon, KARA’s second full-length Japanese album ‘Super Girl‘ sold 586,400 copies as of January 9th, while Girls’ Generation‘s first full-length Japanese album also titled ‘Girls’ Generation‘ sold 734,000 copies.

For now Girls’ Generation is ahead by 148,400 copies, but it is too early to be optimistic. KARA’s ‘Super Girl’ was released more recently on November 23rd, and was #1 on Oricon’s Weekly Chart for five days straight it’s first week of release, it also achieved #1 on Oricon’s Monthly Chart.

In two short days, the album sold 100,000 copies and 200,000 by the fifth day. In eight days, the album sold over 300,000 copies and 400,000 after 16 days. By the 29th day, the album had sold over 500,000 copies.

After less than a month after the release, the album impressively secured the #7 spot on a list of the overall best selling albums of the year for 2011.

Girls’ Generation is also continuing to increase the number of sales with their new repackaged album which includes their latest hits. The Girls’ Generation members seem determined to be the first Korean girl group to sell a million copies of their album in Japan.

Of all the Korean singers that have promoted in Japan, the one artist who broke the million-mark is none other than Asia’s ever-rising star, BoA. BoA’s second Japanese album ‘Valenti‘ released back in January of 2003 sold approximately 1,240,000 copies, setting a new record.

One thing is for sure. One of the two girl groups will become the first Korean artist in 9 years to sell over a million copies, and the first ever foreign girl group to break a million. Fans are highly curious to find out which group will reach the goal first.

  1. It's not a fair comparison. Snsd got an early headstart and they are almost up there. They had concerts and repackages too. Why not just make it who made it to 1 million the fastest. That sounds more fair to me.

  2. I choose to read the highlighted parts. Those highlighted parts should be alliterated many times over for all those haters. Especially this:

Without a country wide tour and that glitz and repackaged crap. Excuse my language.

"Without a country wide tour and that glitz and repackaged crap."

    Agree 100% :D
Whatever happens, KARA has managed to exceed our expectations that we had for them when we first heard they were going to debut in Japan.
Now, let's look forward to what our hardworking girls will be giving us in 2012.

    Bring it on, ladies!

  4. We hafta admit, with the repackaged album, SNSD *should* be first. Now if Super Girl managed to do it before them, I'll be ROFL for that feat coz it'll be just DAEBAK!!

Nevertheless, KARA's achievements are not diminished if SNSD takes that "first" away. KARA has broken so many records as it is.

    KARA sugoi!!!

  5. If the other group becomes the first, the korean media will make it a big deal again like they always do. When KARA reached 2 million total sales last year it wasn't really talked about. It was mentioned in an akp translated korean article but they combined it with other other news about kpop groups who ranked in Oricon.

  6. wow..so many bitter comments about snsd. lol
well, i think when they (korean music industry) have an ace they love to brag for so long, they will make another seems like nothing.
as for kara, no matter how popular they r in japan or korea, it still feels like "well,it's only recently n maybe not for a long time" since they have never been one of the aces in there in the first place.

n maybe this is not going to change forever.

  8. Kara has managed to endear into the hearts of the whole of Japan by their willingness to go the extra mile by immersing themselves in the culture, investing effort in learning the language and not taking things for granted by not singing a Japanese version of 'Lupin' or 'Honey' for a few extra bucks. They have gone for a long term growth strategy, and the dividends of that investment of effort is now showing. Well done indeed, Kara.

If I were to compare Kara and SDSN in the Japanese market, the latter would be someone that you meet at a bar, flirt with, talk naughty, but eventually leading to nothing. However, Kara is the girl that every man wants to marry, have kids, share family secrets and grow old with.
